Watercolour drawings of theatres and other buildings in towns of the south of England: the original drawings for James Winston's Theatric Tourist, 1805, 1802

1. Inside front cover. A series of pencilled calculations. Words such as “Christopher, Bath,” “Talbot, Bristol,” and “Gloster theatre is situate in Westgate Street, up a court.”
2. Coloured drawing of what look like shop fronts, facing the sea. Drawings of bathing machines. Pencilled in the margin, “Ryall, 4 Augusta Place, or 11,” and words such as “Theatre Royal,” “Rolls,” “Jeifries.”
3. Drawing of unidentified building by the seafront.
4. Unfinished drawing of building with portico front and columns.
5. More pencilled town names and figures.
6. Incomplete drawing of building, with pencilled annotation commencing: “is situate at Frankfort Gate, Manager Smith. Will hold £70. Is the property of ‘S. Factor,’ or ‘S. Foote.’ “ The rest quite indecipherable. [Plymouth].
7. Rough pencil outline of what could be a theatre plan, with list of pencilled names such as: “Daintry, Tamworth, Wrexham, Ashley,” and others.
8. Drawing of terrace of houses by the seaside, with bathing machines.
9. Rough pencil drawing of shop front.
10. Well executed pen and wash drawing of theatre facade. Barely decipherable pencil description at bottom seems to be “Elevation of proposed theatre at …” (Pl. 10).
11. Drawing of small theatre front. In pencil beneath, “Friar Street, Reading.”
12. Drawing of theatre façade, beneath, the words: “Cirencester Theatre, Gloucester Street, Sep. 17, 1802.” (P1. 6).
13. Unfinished drawing of three-floored building. 
14. Drawing of small building bearing on the facade; “Sadlers Wells House. Fantoccini Exhibition.” In pencil beneath, “Seward’s Puppet Shew.” (Pl. 7).
15.  Incomplete drawing of theatre façade. In pencil beneath what looks like “Windsor Theatre,” or could be “Winford.”
16. Theatre façade with arched carriage entrance at side. Beneath in pencil: “Canterbury Theatre in Orange Street. Aug. 1, 1802. Mrs. Baker’s theatre. The entrance to the stage door I suppose to be up the gateway. The theatre appears to be large.” (Pl. 8).
17. Rough pencil sketches of doorways and a house or other plan. The name “Sir Step Cotterell, Privy Council Office, Whitehall,” written in pencil.
18. Theatre façade, beneath, in pencil: “Rochester Theatre, situate just out of Rochester on the new road the place called Troy Town  - a neat brick front, Mrs. Baker’s company. 1 August 1802.” (Pl. 9 ).
19. Drawing in colour of theatre entrance doorway (the doorway to the building in the drawing which follows). Pencil plan of theatre (rectangular Georgian). Considerable writing beneath, of which the following is decipherable: “Dressing room over the theatre and stage roomy. Box office (or box offices) . . . About 10 (16?) years ago there were two theatres in this town, one near the fountain, the other near the church, belonging to Mrs. 
Baker.  Mr. Mate and Mr. Robson built by . . . the present theatre. The theatre is situate near Hawley Square. Patentee Grubb - Shaw ¼ , Whirley (late Mr. Booth) ¼, Mr. King 1/8. The theatre open about the beginning of July. If the town be full they play 5 nights per week, Mon., T.  W. F. Sat. finishing about the beginning of October. Willis [Wells ?] acting manager. Theatre good and roomy holds about £80. Wings work on ladders. Curtain opens [then a blank] feet. [Margate]
20. Theatre façade. Beneath in watercolour capitals the word “Margate.” Indecipherable pencil writing, except for the words: “Mate and Robeson sold this property to Grubb . . . Booth …”
21. Rough pencil plan of what looks like road distances between towns, whose names are abbreviated to three letters each. Finishing at top with “to Birmingham.”
22. Drawing of building. Beneath, “Entrance to Cheltenham Theatre.” (Pl. 11)
23. Rough pencil sketch of a theatre plan, labelled “Old Cheltenham.” At right, rough drawing designed, apparently, to show distances between tiers of boxes in auditorium.
24. Drawing of theatre façade labelled “Theatre Royal.” (Pl. 12).
25. Rough wash drawings of theatre plans. First shows stage, pit, and boxes; second, upper boxes, and lobby opening on to balcony. (Pl 13).
26. Drawing of buildings. Pencilled beneath, “King Street, Br… This is the last drawing, and is inside the back cover of the original book or portfolio. [Bristol]
