Harry Mann first went to sea in 1908 when he joined the sailing ship Armadale as a deck boy on a voyage from England to Australia. In 1926 he went to work on the Edie Creek goldfields, East New Guinea and, after some time in the Solomon Islands, returned to Australia in ca. 1938
