The diary is covered in plain red cloth, with a holder for a pencil on one side and a ribbon that can be tied around it. The entries are in pencil and include some crude pencil sketches of Aborigines, a kangaroo and an emu. The fragments form letters to Lasseter's wife, Rene. Object History

Originally purchased by Ion Idriess who included a transcription in his book 'Lasseter's last ride' published by Angus & Robertson in 1931. The diary and fragments remained with Angus & Robertson until 1977, when they were acquired by the Library as part of the publishing company's records

Published information

The manuscript was published in facsimile by Angus & Robertson in 1986. Lasseter's diary. [Sydney] : Angus & Robertson, 1986. It was also largely published in Ion Idriess' book, 'Lasseter's Last Ride', Syd., Angus & Robertson, 1932.

In 1929 Harold Lasseter claimed that, years earlier, he had discovered a rich gold bearing reef in Central Australia. In 1930 an expedition was formed, with Lasseter as guide, to search for the reef.
