Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt, 1813-1848, naturalist and explorer, was born in Germany and arrived in Sydney in February 1842. In 1844-5 he led an expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, and in 1848 disappeared when leading an expedition to cross to Swan River.
