John (Jack) Laidley Mort was born on 12 July 1886, the son of James Laidley Mort and Mary Joesphine Coveny, at the residence 'Brou' in Bodalla, NSW. He was the grandson of colonial businessman and entrepreneur Thomas Sutcliffe Mort (1816-1878) who established Mort's Dock and Mort & Co. in Sydney, and the Bodalla estate on the NSW South Coast.
