Three albumen, carte de visite print photographs by John Hurbert Newman. The portraits show two sons and a daughter of John Pope (1827-1912), whose names are inscribed on the photos’ verso sides. This identifies the sitters as Alfred John (1859-1928), Roland James (1864-1952), and Alice Maude Pope.

Roland Pope was born in Sydney, and went to school in Hobart; and he later studied medicine at Sydney University, Glasgow and then Edinburgh. In 1893 he set up an ophthalmic practice in Elizabeth Street, Sydney, and was head of ophthalmology at Sydney Hospital for a period of 17 years.
