Biographical note
Edward Nairne (1726–1806) had apprenticed under Matthew Loft before opening his own premises in Cornhill. Thomas Blunt in turn had been Nairne’s apprentice; the two became partners in 1774. Nairne was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and he received commissions from many scientists of the day, including Henry Cavendish and Ben Franklin.
