"This was published in the year in which the Board of Longitude was commissioned. This proposal involved a network of stationary ships around the world from which would be fired a shot at midnight. It had the backing of Isaac Newton. It marks a beginning of what would be the long process to solve the riddle of longitude" -- Curator's notes.
Mitchell Library copy has reproductions of two letters by Whiston and Ditton, published in the Guardian newspaper dated July 11, 1713 and December 7, 1713 respectively, bound in back of book. Binding is 20th century calf, ruled in gilt and blind....
