Summary
Describes the volcanic eruption which broke out on Heimaey, the biggest of the Vestmann Islands of Iceland, during the night of January 23rd 1973. Heimaey was evacuated, the flow of lava was stopped by having great amounts of sea water pumped onto it, and after the eruption ended tephra was cleared from the town.
