Administrative / Biographical history

Charles Grimes (1772-1858), Deputy Surveyor-General of New South Wales, arrived in Sydney in 1791 and proceeded to Norfolk Island. Recalled to Sydney in 1794, he eventually replaced August Alt as Surveyor-General in 1803.
