“Martens Journal ZA 429, records that on 1 June 1834, Beagle was at Port Famine, 9 June passing through the Magdalen Straits, and by 11 June was through the Straits of Magellan to the Pacific Ocean. When he drew this portrait, he had been on board the Beagle since Dec. 1833”.

Signed and dated `C.M. June 1834’ lower left corner, and note 'On board HMS Beagle' at lower right.

Attributions / Conjectures

Attributed to Martens, the signature and note appear to be in Martens' hand compared with Martens' Sketchbook of scenes around Sydney, botanical, architectural, and ship studies, ca. 1835-1837 at DL PX 14.
