Signed and dated 'C. Wetherill' at lower centre right. Title in pencil in Sir William Dixson's hand on paper label on back.

Attributions / Conjectures

No information about provenance could be found (1982).
In the absence of further provenance details, G.C. Ingleton, author of 'Matthew Flinders', Guilford, Surrey, Genesis...1986, expresses doubt (9/3/87) that the subject of the portrait is Matthew Flinders compared with MIN 52.

Flinders was in England from August 1800, to July 1801 (see J. Mack's 'Matthew Flinders, 1774-1814', Sydney : Nelson, 1966, pp.43-81.

A miniature artist of this surname (i.e. Wetherill) of London and Portsmouth (no Christian name is given) exhibited at the Royal Academy London, 1783 (see D. Foskett's 'A dictionary of British miniature painters', London : Faber, 1972).
