John Thomas Baptist (1804-1873) was born in Portugal. He arrived in Sydney in 1829 as a servant to Charles Wilson, civil engineer. He then established himself as a butcher in Goulburn Street. In 1838, he purchased 3 acres of land in Bourke Street, Surry Hills, and with his son John Thomas, set up a market and floral garden known as `Baptist's Garde...
