Deposited by the Linnean Society of New South Wales on permanent loan in 1970. Subsequently presented to the Mitchell Library in 1993.
Collection history
These drawings were bequeathed to William Sharp Macleay and later passed into the possession of his brother George who presented them to Sir William Macleay in 1887 who then handed them over to the Linnean Society of New South Wales.

Administrative / Biographical history
James Stuart, born in Ireland, was a natural history painter and surgeon who arrived in Sydney in 1834. From 1838 to 1840 Stuart was assistant surgeon on Norfolk Island and by 1841 he was the acting medical officer in charge of the Quarantine Ground at North Head, Sydney. Many of his drawings are of local Sydney and Norfolk Island wildlife.
