Walter Edmund Roth, physician, anthropologist and protector of Aborigines, was born in London in 1861. He studied biology at Magdalen College, Oxford and undertook medical training at St Thomas's Hospital, London. By mid-1892 Roth was serving as a locum in Sydney.
