Here, we show that the expression of the main DnaJ protein encoded in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 is essential for cell survival. While the N‐terminally located J‐ and G/F‐domains are sufficient for the protein to fulfill its fundamental in vivo functions, the presence of the remaining domains is vital under stress conditions.
