A comprehensive continuous quality improvement process was used to change the standard of practice for antimicrobial use in surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Presbyterian. Twelve months after implementation, compliance with preoperative dose timing guidelines improved to nearly 85% from 40% at baseline.
