Centrosome duplication is important for assembly of the bipolar microtubule spindle to which replicated chromosomes are attached prior to cell division. Matsumoto and Maller report in a study that a surge of calcium ions followed by activation of calmodulin-dependent kinase II is the trigger for centrosome duplication.
