Cosmic gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are one of the most perplexing of all astronomical phenomena. GRBs occur at random intervals and at random locations in the sky, although burst durations seem to follow a bimodal distribution pattern. Modern GRB observations and theories about their origin are discussed.
