The mammalian olfactory system is capable o f detecting thousands of different odor molecules. Considerable evidence suggests that each olfactory neuron expresses only one olfactory receptor (OR) from the large OR family encoded by more than 1000 genes scattered throughout the genome. This phenomenon is known as the one OR-one neuron rule.
