In patients with achalasia, symptom reduction at 2 years was not superior with laparoscopic Heller's myotomy (LHM) as compared with pneumatic dilation. Perforation of the esophagus occurred in 4% of patients with pneumatic dilation, and mucosal tears occurred in 12% with LHM.
