Potential notifiable diseases, specifically foot-and-mouth disease and vesicular stomatitis, were ruled out on clinical grounds. In the cranial half of the oesophagus there were very striking findings: numerous cream-coloured, circumscribed and coalescing, circular foci, up to 1 cm in diameter, with a thin red rim ( Fig 1 ).
