种群是构成群落的基本单位，种群结构不仅对群落结构有直接影响，而且能表征群落的发展和演变趋势。种群结构包括径级结构、高度结构、年龄结构等。年龄结构是种群的重要特征，但由于年龄的数据在许多情况下非常难于得到，因此许多学者在进行种群结构的研究过程中，都采用了大小结构分析法。
