Betty Roland was born Mary Isabel Maclean at Kaniva, Victoria in 1903. She later adopted her father's christian name. After leaving school she worked as a junior reporter for Table Talk and Sun News-Pictorial in Melbourne. Her first play, The Touch of Silk, was produced by Melbourne Repertory Theatre in 1928.
