Signature / Inscriptions
Titled on spar in lower right hand side. Unsigned. 'Probably painted in the sixties' lettered on back of canvas below accession mark.
Attributions / Conjectures
Old catalogue card attributed to Haughton Forrest, without giving authority. A signed painting of Hobart by Haughton Forrest is in Mitchell Library and the style appears quite different, ships and buildings being drawn in great detail (Ref: ML 424)
Date note
Painted some time after 1875 as the attributed artist Haughton Forrest evidently did not come to Australia until after that date
The view is earlier than 1862 as tenders were approved in April of that year for Fort Macquarie sea wall (Ref: Government Gazette); Government House is without the portico on the Southern Side which has date 1873 o...
