G. W. R. (George William Robert) Southern (1899-1972) was born in Cardiff, Wales, son of Thomas Angus Southern (1860-1931), mining engineer, and his wife Grace, nee James. He emigrated to Australia in 1922. He became a Quaker in Melbourne, taught at the Friends' High School, Hobart, Tas., 1925-1926, and within a decade had resigned from the Society...
