Joseph Rennard Orton was born at Hull, England in 1795. He became a Methodist clergyman in 1826 and was posted to Jamaica. In 1830 he returned to England an in 1831 he was sent to Australia as leader of the Wesleyan Church. In 1835 Van Diemen's Land was made a separate district and Orton became its first chairman.
