Notes
General note
The Homestead, a substantial house at Bondi, an eastern beachside suburb of Sydney, was built on land acquired in 1851 by Edward Smith Hall in trust for his daughter Georgiana Elizabeth (1821-1860). Her husband, Francis O'Brien, later purchased the house and its surrounding 200 acres.
Signature / Inscriptions
"Sketch of 'The Homestead' / 21 Sir Thomas Mitchell Rd, Bondi / Artist unknown / Dorothy Rigney" -- in typescript on reverse of photograph
Attributions / Conjectures
Jenny Priestley believes that the original drawing was by Georgiana Sophia Ormond O'Brien (1845-1923), daughter of Francis and Georgiana O'Brien, and that the small figure in the lower left corner depicts herself.
Date note
Photograph dated from publication date of The entwining branches / Jenny Priestley. St Ives: Jenny Priestley, 1993 in which the photograph appears.
Original drawing dated from the period between date of purchase of land on which 'The Homestead' was subsequently built and date of death of the probable artist.
