Ross Edwards composed MBOC in response to a commission from the Austral String Quartet while he was living in a remote Yorkshire farmhouse in 1972. The Austral Quartet (Donald Hazelwood, Ronald Ryder, Ronald Cragg and Gregory Elmaloglou) were very supportive of Edwards' early work.
