The mug is heavily engraved over most of the surface and handle, and bears the inscription: 'Presented to William Dixson by his Grandfather William [Ed] Shaw. 16th July 1870'.
Enclosed with the mug is a note saying 'Mr Dixson handed me this on 10/3/1953 and said it was to go to Library. H.'
