Joseph M. Vitale was born in 1866 in Gildone, Italy. He joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1886 and was ordained as a priest in 1888. He was among the first group of missionaries to arrive on Yule Island, following the establishment of a Catholic mission there in 1885.
