John Gilchrist formed the company Gilchrist & Alexander with John Alexander in 1838. Gilchrist’s nephew John Brown Watt became a partner in 1852 and on the death of his uncle in 1866 Watt became the senior partner. Gilchrist, Watt & Co. later became Gilchrist, Watt & Sanderson Pty. Ltd. of O'Connell Street, Sydney.
