Joseph Cooke was born in Wigan, England in 1888 and trained there as a mining engineer. He was a member of the Westhoughton Wigan Coal & Iron Co. No. 3 Rescue Team. After arriving in Australia Cooke joined the A.I.F. in July 1915, embarked on HMAT Argyllshire A8 in 1916 and served with the 9th Australian Field Ambulance in France as a private (regi...
