In 1957, Patrick White invited artist Sidney Nolan to design a book jacket for White's novel Voss based around the doomed explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. In response, Nolan sent this preliminary sketch from England on a postcard to White in Sydney.
The design was modified and used as the book jacket for Voss, London : Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1957.
