Fanny Jane Stokes (1819–1848) arrived in Australia in 1825 and married John Lort Stokes (1812-1885), a midshipman under Philip Parker King, in 1841. Whilst J. L. Stokes was away serving on the Beagle, Fanny lived at The Vineyard, which was the home of the artist's brother-in-law, and the place where daughter Fanny Anne was born in 1842. Fanny Jane Stokes died in South Africa on 19 July 1848.
