Queen Mary Ann Sullivan is mentioned in a number of sources held in the Library including articles in Dawn, a magazine published between 1952-1975 by the New South Wales Aborigines Welfare Board. Good condition with light marks/spotting to sky; light scratching visible when magnified.
Object History
Purchased by the vendor as an estate purchase in the 1990s, when it was in an album formerly belonging to G.E. Jones, headmaster of Bundarra Public School, who achieved fame for his development of a phonics system. The remainder of the album is said to have contained photographs of Bundarra Public School & local views.

Mary Ann Sullivan (d.1916) was the daughter of an Irish settler and an Aboriginal mother. Her mother died when Sullivan was aged about seven, and her father sent her to a convent from where she escaped, severely cutting her hands when scaling a high tin wall.
