Wintergarden Action Committee records, 1980-1987

Although Australian hoteliers have had their share of problems in recent years, the long-term prospects for Australia's hospitality business remain healthy. Australia's cachet as an exotic land remains, and with so little of the country developed, it probably will continue to do so. Tourism, already the country's biggest export, is still in its infancy, and Asians and Europeans in particular are eager to explore there. Australia's tourism industry misjudged the impact of such events as the worldwide recession and the Persian Gulf War, and today markets like Sydney and Melbourne are overbuilt, with occupancies hovering around 50% and heavy discounting taking place. With new development on hold, existing properties stand to benefit from Japanese tourists. Room for development in certain segments remains.
