No Great Mischief, Alistair MacLeod's riveting first novel (about Cape Bretoners), was inadvertently submitted too late for last year's Governor General's nominations. This year it was entered but not nominated nor was it nominated for the Giller Prize. Despite snubs by the country's two major award competitions, it's sold 50,000 copies in Canada and will be out in paperback in the spring. CBC Radio One shows also spawned three books on the current best- seller list: Wanted Words by This Morning producer Jane Farrow, Vinyl Cafe, edited by host Stuart McLean and Michael Ignatieff's The Rights Revolution, his Massey Lecture Series on rights and privileges in a democracy broadcast on Ideas. Shorts by others: Three Stories From The End Of Everything, dark tales about relationships adapted and directed by Toronto writer Semi Chellas, a name to remember- to be shown on Showcase; and Fly, written and directed by Jigar Talatti about a boy turned adolescent who all his life has wanted to fly and not study medicine like his parents want. It showed on CBC-TV's Reflections.
