What distinguishes [Diana MClure]'s uniform from scores of other blue- collar workers is a simple patch worn on both sleeves of her shirt. A bald eagle stands defiantly against a backdrop of the American flag, designed with nine stars and 11 stripes, a reminder of Sept. 11, 2001 -- the infamous day when terror struck the heart of the United States.Created under the Aviation and Security Act last November, TSA was given one year to staff the nation's commercial airports with federal screeners, a deadline it met on Nov. 19. Federal screeners must be U.S. citizens, speak and write English fluently and pass a physical exam before joining this new corps, says Dave Steigman, a TSA spokesman. Screeners have the opportunity to continue to learn, and be promoted to higher positions, which TSA hopes will be a motivating factor, [Brian Turmail] says. TSA also offers a full-range of government benefits and salaries between $23,600 and $35,400 a year.
