Event ends at 10.50am WHERE: Strangers Dining Room, NSW Parliament House, Macquarie Street Sydney (Parking at Sydney Eye Hospital, Hospital Road) Please allow time to go through security WHO: NSW Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance Federal Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes AM (please note, Mr Innes has a guide dog but prefers not to release its name to save it getting distracted by members of the public calling it out) Guide Dogs CEO Dr Graeme White People, and their guide dogs, who have compelling stories of discrimination relating to being refused access to hospitality venues FILMING/PHOTO/INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: - Minister Constance and Graeme Innes with his guide dog being served morning tea at Parliament House in line with training protocols from Guide Dogs NSW/ACT - Interviews and overlay of Minister Constance, Graeme Innes, Guide Dogs CEO Dr Graeme White and people and their guide dogs - People and their guide dogs to talk about their experiences with venues - There will be the opportunity to conduct interviews and filming after the event, but outside in Martin Place - Reminder to please not pat, talk to or try to feed a guide dog in harness as this distracts them from doing their job of safely guiding their owner who is vision impaired The Guide Dog Access Laws A harnessed guide dog is legally allowed to accompany its owner into the public areas of all venues under the: Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Section 9 & 23); NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1983 NSW Companion Animal Act 1998 (Sections 14, 59 & 60); and The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (Chapter 3, Section 24 (1) b). [Roy Morgan] Statistics Show Low Public Awareness of Guide Dog Access laws, September 2011 42% of the public either didn't know (35%) or said no (7%) when asked if the law allows guide dogs to accompany their owners into restaurants; and 36% of the public either didn't know (30%) or said no (6%) when asked if the law allows guide dogs to accompany their owners into hotels and clubs.
