Series 06: Uniting World, Formerly known as Commission For World Mission CFWM, 1817-2012. (U-1-13 Boxes 196-221)

28 March 1791-10 August 1791;  Journal of a voyage from Port Jackson to the Celebes [now Sulawesi] in the Dutch ship Waaksamheyd which was hired to take the crew of the Sirius to England. Waterhouse describes the difficulty of navigating without copies of Cook's  Voyages which were lost on the Sirius and the decision by Captain John Hunter and his officers not to sail to Norfolk Island for supplies. He includes a detailed description of the people and events which took place during the ship's visit to the Duke of York's Island (between New Britain and New Ireland) in May, and on Mindanao in August. The journal is unfinished.   
 
1801, 1803;  Letters (2) received from George Bass. In his brief autograph letter signed from Portsmouth, 9 Jan 1801, Bass bids farewell to Waterhouse before he (Bass)  leaves  for Port Jackson;  in his autograph letter signed from Sydney, 1 Jan 1803, Bass  tells Waterhouse that he 'means to cross the South Pacific upon a venture', informs him that he has named four inlets near Dusky Bay in New Zealand the Inlets of Venus, and describes his exploration of the Pacific including a visit to the Navigators' Islands [Samoa]. He mentions previous discoveries by James Cook, William Broughton and Pedro de Quiros. 
 
1806;  Letters (2) received from Sir Joseph Banks. Two autographed letters signed by Banks, Soho Square, both with long draft replies by Waterhouse. In his letter of 7 June 1806 Banks requests information from Waterhouse about Simeon Lord whose valuable cargo of sealskins has arrived in England.  Waterhouse's draft reply contains information concerning Lord's commercial activities in Port Jackson with Henry Kable and Joseph Underwood. Banks' letter of 8 July 1806 asks for information concerning the introduction of merino sheep into Port Jackson. Waterhouse's reply details  his involvement, together with William Kent, Philip Gidley King and William Paterson, in taking Spanish sheep from the Cape of Good Hope to Port Jackson and their subsequent purchase by colonists including John Macarthur, Samuel Marsden, Thomas  Rowley, Thomas Moore and William Cox.

4. 'A few lines, occasioned by the Accident which befell His Majesty's Ship Bellerophon, Commanded by Thos Pasley Esqr. on the 19 July 1793 abt. 4 oclock in the Morning';  thirteen stanzas, unsigned
5. Account by Waterhouse, undated, of the victory of the Glorious First of June 1794 in which the Channel Fleet under the command of Lord Howe defeated the French
6. 'Lord Hows [Howe's] Order of Battle on the 1st of June 1794', listing English and French ships in the action;  2 copies, one in Waterhouse's hand
7. Autograph letter signed by Captain John Hunter, 17 July 1794, congratulating Waterhouse on his appointment, with Hunter, to HMS Reliance
8. 'An Account of the inferior Officers or Seamen who have granted Wills or Powers of Attorney on board His Majesty's Ship Reliance between 1st November 1794 and 17th June 1795';  contemporary copy
9. Documents concerning arrangements for convoying East India Company ships from St Helena to England in 1800;  comprises: 3 letters by Robert Brooke, Governor of St Helena, 10-12 June 1800, to Waterhouse as commander of HMS Reliance;  copy of letter from H. Carneggy, Master of the Mornington, 9 June 1800, asking that his ship be escorted by Reliance;  letter signed by W. Ramsay of the East India  Company, 18 Dec 1800, forwarding a reward to Waterhouse for escorting the Company's ships.

1792-1819;  Legal documents and correspondence mainly concerning his property in New South  Wales.
1. Contemporary copies of legal documents: grant, 22 Feb 1792, by Governor Arthur Phillip to Phillip Scaffer [Schaffer] of 140 acres near Parramatta known as The Vineyard;  deed, 18 Aug 1797, recording purchase of this land by Waterhouse from Schaffer;  grant, 1 May 1797, from Governor John Hunter to Henry Waterhouse of 25 acres at Waterhouse Farm, Liberty Plains;  grant, 17 Oct  1797, from John Hunter to Henry Waterhouse of 4 1/2 acres at The Vineyard.
2. Valuation of Waterhouse's land near Parramatta, 17 March 1813, signed by Samuel Marsden and Rowland Hassall.
3. Statement, undated [after 1812], of money due to Waterhouse's estate from Thomas Rowley's estate

5. Letters (2) received from Thomas Rowley in NSW concerning Waterhouse's land  and stock. In his letter of 14 May 1802 (autographed letter signed, and contemporary copy) Rowley mentions Matthew Flinders and George Bass, the shortage of food, civil unrest in the colony and the courts martial of Nicholas  Bayly and John Piper;  in his letter of 16 Aug 1804 (contemporary copy) Rowley discusses his own financial affairs and those of William Cox, comments on Governor King, and reports that Bass is feared lost.
6. Letter received from Joseph Sherrard, HMS Buffalo, Port Jackson, 20 July 1805. Sherrard thanks Waterhouse for forwarding a 'narrative' by Sherrard to Sir Joseph Banks, sends two drawings of Port Jackson [by John Eyre] and promises one of Waterhouse's farm, comments on Waterhouse's property and reports rumours of a sighting of George Bass in the Pacific. Sherrard also includes a first hand description of the new settlement of Port Dalrymple [Launceston].
7. Autograph letter signed by John Hunter to Arthur Harrison (Thomas Rowley's agent in London), 18 Aug 1805, regretting Hunter's inability to assist Rowley's claims to a payment for service on Norfolk Island.
8. Letter received from John Blaxland in NSW, 23 Oct 1807, concerning Waterhouse's land and stock. Blaxland complains about the administration of Governors King and Bligh, and comments on the cattle industry and Thomas Rowley's sheep.
9. Money order, to Thomas Collicott and his wife, master and matron of the Orphan School, New South Wales, signed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, 24 June 1819
