Collection 24: Australian flowers, 1787-1799 / possibly by William Dawes

Manuscript journal, signed by Tobin, written in 1797 while he was serving in the frigate Thetis off the coast of North America. He addresses his account to 'My dear James', probably his older brother. Page one has note: 'Copied 1819, [18]20, some notes having been added;  and more probably will'. The lists of officers aboard Providence and Assistant are annotated with the dates of death to 1831. In the text he describes the images in his sketches and indicates where they should appear when printed. Tobin presumably hoped to publish his journal after the Admiralty failed to support the publication of Bligh's official account which was to include some of his sketches. The journal was never published. It includes several small sketches and maps of Adventure Bay and Torres Strait copied from Matthew Flinders' charts published in 1814. 
Tobin was a perceptive observer and his journal is replete with information about people, natural history and scenery in the places he visited. Providence stayed almost four months in Tahiti to obtain breadfruit trees. Tobin gives extensive descriptions of many aspects of life including customs, social relationships, trade and vocabulary. The port of Cape Town, where the ship stayed for two months, is also described in detail. Tobin was one of the first Europeans to describe the people of Torres Strait.
