Jorgen Jorgenson journals, 2 - 29 September 1826; 21 January- 10 April 1827

2-29 Sept. 1826;  An incomplete journal in a small notebook. Inscribed on label pasted on cover: 'Journal of Jorgen Jorgenson when on an expedition of discovery in Van Diemen's Land, 2nd Sept. 1826'. Cover also has annotation by Thomas Scott: 'Given by Jorgen Jorgenson himself to Mr. George Scott of Mount Morriston near Ross, when lodging there in 1827 & 8'. The journal describes Jorgenson's journey of exploration for the Van Diemen's Land Company. With Mark Logan and Andrew Colbert, he set out from Dr James Ross' farm on the Shannon River travelling in a northwesterly direction. Jorgenson claimed that they sighted Frenchman's Cap, but modern scholars believe that they reached no further than the area near Mt Jerusalem. Includes a copy of a letter to Henry Hellyer, V.D.L. Co. surveyor, 26 Sept. 1826. An annotation by Scott on an interleaved page states that the last part of the journal was used by convict servants at Mount Morriston to light pipes. 21 Jan.- 10 Apr. 1827;  Journal in notebook. Inscribed on labels pasted on cover: 'Jorgenson's journal of discoveries in V.D. Land, and death of Mr. Lorimer, 1827, from Circular Head to the Pieman's River, West Coast'. Jorgenson describes how he left Hobart on 21 Jan. 1827 for the V.D.L. Co's post at Circular Head. There he joined an expedition led by Clement Powell Lorymer, the Company's surveyor. Together with Thomas Jones and James Dunn (or Dunne), they set off down the west coast, reaching the Donaldson River, a tributary of the Pieman River. Lorymer was drowned on the return journey.
