Correspondents include: Thomas Hassall, Anne Hassall, James Hassall (1802-1862), Catherine Elizabeth Hassall (Kate), Charles Rowland Hassall, Frances Hassall, Thomas Hancox Hassall, Marianne Hassall, George Thomas Hassall, Eliza Marsden Hassall, Frederic King, John Oxley, George F. Macarthur, William Shelley and Francis Cox.

Letters received by James S. Hassall form the main body of letters in this volume and include letters received from the age of 14 when he was a student through to 1854 when he was at Berrima. Early correspondence includes letters received from his parents, brothers and sisters and cousins while he was a student. He later received letters from younger family members while they were students at The King's School, Parramatta, and at Mr Woolls' school at Parramatta. Later correspondence includes many letters received from family members, along with letters received from friends.
