Mossman's [i.e. Mosman] Bay, near Sydney, [ca. 1856-64] / S.T. Gill

"Relics of the whaling days can be seen in the wharf and sea wall and what are probably the remains of two capstans. Of the buildings, only one still stands. Known locally as `The Barn' it is the one with three upstairs windows. It was used for storage of gear, the upper portion used as a sail loft. The colonaded building was used for storage and officers and the other two quarters for the workmen engaged in the heaving-down and repairing of ships. The cottage nearest the water was destroyed by fire in 1914 ... In the distance on the hills to the right and the left are two large early houses of Mosman ... That on the right, with the flag-pole was built as by Archibald Mosman as his home ... It was later known as `The Nest' and was demolished in 1921. Oswald Bloxsome arrived in Australia in 1838 and soon acquired large pastoral holdings. In 1844 he purchased the forty acres of land in Mosman which he built `The Rangers', often described as an Elizabethan mansion. It was on one of the walls of this room that Sir Oswald Brierly painted his famous picture of HMS Rattlesnake in a storm off Timor. This is the house in the top left of the view. It was demolished in 1914"
