Philip Gidley King papers, Norfolk Island, 1791-1807

Volume 1 contains 241 pages of copies of letters received and sent by Philip Gidley King. 

Documents deal almost exclusively with the affairs of Norfolk Island under King’s administration. Correspondence includes payment of salaries, certificates of service, correspondence between government officials in Norfolk Island, and their agents in London.  

Matters discussed concern the irregularity of pay to government officers, the different classes of people on Norfolk Island, and the relations between the colonists and the aboriginal peoples in New South Wales. Correspondents include David Collins, James Sykes, William Chapman, and John White.

There is an index in the front of the volume, probably in the hand of Philip Gidley King. In addition to this there is an 8 page hand-written overview of the documents by historian, George Henderson, dated 14 October, 1926. 

The volume also includes a copy of the marriage certificate between Philip Gidley King and Anna Josepha Coombe, on 11 March, 1791 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, dated 20 May, 1938.
