MacLauglin - Memoire sur la decouverte des terres australes, situees au couchant du Cap Horn, du Chili, et du Perou... / C-G. Praslin

A proposal, in French, by MacLauglin for an expedition to explore the southern lands, addressed to Cesar-Gabriel de Choiseul, Duke of Praslin and Minister of Marine. MacLaughlin asks for funds to explore the Pacific Ocean and to found a South Sea trading company. After describing the voyages of explorers including Gonneville, Quiros, Torres and Tasman, he details his own plans which include the establishment of a colony on the Falkland Islands. He proposes that after leaving the Chilean coast, he will sail westward for the unknown south seas to take possession for France of all newly discovered lands. The latter part of the volume contains details and tables of costs for ships, men and equipment needed for his 'voyage secret'. The volume is accompanied by a typescript description prepared by Karl W. Hiersemann, bookseller of Leipzig, addressed to Angus & Robertson, Sydney. The clear manuscript text is written on pages decorated by a coloured stencilled border.  The fine brown morocco binding is tooled in gold, and includes the Duke's coat of arms.
