Freycinet family aggregated collection of papers chiefly from the Archives de Laage

A dossier of 29 documents containing Louis de Freycinet’s working notes, sketches and calculations concerning magnetism.
In wrapper labelled ‘Intensité magnétique. Formules et théorie’ (with Laage archive stamp: Carton 14, Dossier 280 A-B-C).

Wrapper (with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 A & B), containing the following items 1-15:
1. ‘Formules pour l’intensité magnétique’ [1828 or earlier] (1 page on a folded sheet, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 A-1). A later pencil note in Freycinet’s hand comments that these notes were discussed with François Arago on 9 January 1828.
2. ‘Calculs pour la détermination de l’ëquateur magnétique’ (1 page, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 A-2), being a sheet of calculations.
3. ‘Variations Diurnes en Déclinaison magnétique’ (2.5 pages on a single folded sheet, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 A-3), being thoughts on the methods of ‘Mr Macdonal’ [John Macdonald, who studied diurnal variation in Sumatra], and the way in which the observations made by Freycinet confirm his theory. Explains how and when he made his observations, including at Timor, Port Jackson and Hawaii.
4. ‘Magnétisme’ and ‘Observations magnétiques’ (2 sheets pinned together with original hand-made pin, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 A-4 and A-5), being working notes relating to Louis de Freycinet’s draft for the volume on Magnétisme Terrestre in the official account.
5. ‘Magnétisme théorie’ (1 page, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 A-6), being notes for the Magnétisme Terrestre volume, with reference to Humboldt and Biot, Journal de Physique, de chimie et d’histoire naturelle, 17 December 1804, p. 431.

14. ‘Magnétisme; formules diverses’ pp. 4 & 5 (2 pages, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 B-6), being a sheet of calculations relating to measurements at the equator, with one very finely worked diagram.
15. ‘Peut-on répondre de 2. dans la direction de la route de Vaisseau?’ p. 6 (1 page, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 280 B-7), being Freycinet’s notes on the question of how and why the direction of the vessel affects measurements.

16. ‘Observateurs, pendant le Voyage de l’Uranie’ (fragment), listing the abbreviations used for the 13 officers on board the Uranie as they appear in the tables. The list, which includes Freycinet himself, Duperrey and Pellion, was printed in the Magnétisme Terrestre volume (1842), p. 8.
17. ‘Extraits d’observations envoyées de Parramatta (Nlle Hollande) à l’Académie des Sciences de Paris’ (1 page) being a sheet summarising the years when observations were sent by various people, including Cook, Dalrymple, King and Blosseville (covering the period 1766-1828).
18. ‘Formule pour la Latitude’ (2 pages on a small single sheet) with a diagram on verso.
19. Manuscript note beginning ‘Port-Louis...’ (1 page on a single folded sheet), being brief notes relating to observations made on the Uranie voyage in Port Louis, Coupang, Rawak, Guam, Port Jackson and Rio de Janeiro.
20. ‘Déclinaisons de la boussole’ (1 page on a single folded sheet), being the measurements for February 1818 showing, on various days, the observed or estimated variations. [In February 1818 the Uranie was in the Atlantic Ocean].
21. Manuscript note beginning ‘1. Lorsque l’aiguille est face au N...’ (1 page on a single folded sheet), being notes on the magnetic needle, with a diagram.
