Souvenir of Sinai & Palestine, photograph album, between 1916-1917 / by Trooper J. Ellis

One maroon gilt title cloth-covered album containing 96 albumen prints on 12 leaves depicting Australian Light Horse service in the Middle East during the First World War. Photographs of the battle of Romani and the third battle of Gaza are featured in the album. The majority of these images focus on the battles and as troops moved through El Arish, Mesaid, Rafa, Bilah and Wadi Ghuzzeh. There are photographs of Turkish trenches, of Armenian refugees, Turkish prisoners, German prisoners, troops transporting casualties and sites of graves. Also documented are preparations for gas attacks, the process of fumigating uniforms, troops washing and bathing, and tending the horses. There are also photographs of the local people going about their business and some light-hearted moments such as the Anzac steeple chase and one of surfing.
