Philip Gidley King letterbook, Norfolk Island

The letterbook contains 378 pages of copies of letters received and sent by Philip Gidley King. Correspondence includes instructions from Governor Arthur Phillip concerning the establishment of the colony on Norfolk Island, King’s account of arrival at Norfolk Island, his search for a suitable landing place, answers to queries concerning the settlement, and King’s description of the island. Also included are despatches to Governors Phillip and Hunter, and Lt. Governors Grose and Paterson, as well as, receipts and expenditure at Norfolk Island with explanations from King. Most of the letterbook is in the same handwriting, probably King’s secretary, except for pp. 356-378, which is probably in the hand of P.G. King.
